HEALTH 101 | How To Know And What To Do When You Have A Heart Attack [Medical]

More than 10 million people have heart attacks each year, and you hear about it every day, but what do you know about it? #MikellzBluez brings you some important things to know about heart attack….

A heart attack, or myocardial infraction (M1), is a permanent damage to the heart muscle. “Myo” means muscle, “cardinal” refers to the heart and “infraction” means death of tissue due to lack of blood supply.

What happens during a heart attack?
The heart muscle requires a constant supply of oxygen rich blood to nourish it. The coronary arteries provide the heart with its critical blood supply, so if you have coronary artery disease, those arteries become narrow and blood cannot flow as well as it should.

What are the symptoms of heart attack?
Discomfort, pressure, heaviness, or pain in the chest
Fullness, indigestion, or choking feeling (may feel like heart burn)
Sweating, nausea, vomiting or dizziness

What do I do if I have a heart attack?
Quick treatment to open the blocked artery is essential to lessen the amount of damage. At first signs of a heart attack, call for emergency treatment usually. The best time to treat a heart attack is within one or two hours of the first onset of symptoms.

How to know if you are likely to have a heart attack
ECG! The ECG (also known as EKG or electron cardiogram) can tell how much damage has occured to your heart muscle and where it has occurred.
Blood test! Blood may be drawn to measure levels of cardiac enzymes that indicate heart muscle damage.
